The 674 edition of the Fira de Cocentaina continues its course and among the novelties that it has launched in this special year has carried out the evaluation session of the I EVOO FORUM International. A pioneering contest within the framework of the contest that aims to choose the best olive oil at an international level. Almost 40 samples from all over the Spanish territory and Italy have participated in this first edition, a very satisfactory figure, according to the organization, for the current situation.
The tasting room has been the place chosen for the five experts who have made up the jury to evaluate each and every one of the samples. Paco Albert and Keiko (Japan), experts in tastings; Susan Hoover (USA), also an expert in this field and a Masterchef contestant, Marieles Artega (Venezuela) a cocoa specialist and gastronomic journalist and Joan Clement (Valencia), Chef del Troç al Plat have exhaustively evaluated each of the oils. The tasters, arranged in individual cabins, have used all the necessary material according to the standard, COI, water, apple and peaks to carry out the evaluation process. The tasting has not been regulated for a specific time to avoid haste and that the tasters could fill in each of the cards that they have subsequently deposited in sealed envelopes with their verdicts.
The winners who are classified in five golds, five silver, five bronzes and ten special mentions, will be announced in an event scheduled for Saturday, November 21 in which three renowned chefs from the municipality will participate, who will prepare a recipe with the award-winning oils.
For her part, Fair councilor, Eugenia Miguel, who has been present during this evaluation process, has indicated that “we are very happy with the reception that this contest has had and the participation that has been registered; we are mired in uncertainty and we have made a lot of effort and are making so that activities like these go ahead, even if it is adapting them to current circumstances and with all the premises of health security”. He stressed that "we hope that this first edition will be the embryo of a contest that will last over time and accompany the Fair in the sum of future editions".
The president of the Cocentaina Agricultural Cooperative, Rafael Montava, explained that “with this initiative we have wanted to put Cocentaina on the national and international olive map and put in value the Comtat oil, specifically the native white olive of the region. We are in an area with a deeply rooted olive tradition, with an important production. Actions like this help to value the agricultural importance of the municipality and, in turn, highlight the essence of the origins of the Fira de Tots Sants”.
He also pointed out that “framing the contest within the Fira de Cocentaina benefits us all, but especially the winners who, due to the dates on which it was held, will be given the option of labeling this season's oil with the distinction that they get in the International EVOO FORUM.
